Magnolia
If rhododendrons are the "King of Shrubs", then magnolias are surely the "Queen of Trees! From the earliest blooms of Spring to the fragrant flowers of Summer, magnolias offer a wide selection of color and form. The past several decades have produced an explosion of new magnolia cultivars, beginning with the ground-breaking breeding work done at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Augie Kehr, David Leach, Phil Savage and Dennis Ledvina. The diversity of colors include white (mostly found in M. kobus, loebneri, denudata, virginiana and grandiflora. yellow (accuminata and its hybrids), pink (soulangeana). These are just a sampling of colors, species and breeders We like to think that we offer the largest selection of magnolias in the US. Most of our offerings are in 2 gallon pots and are budded(a type of grafting) onto cold-hardy and drought-tolerant M. kobus understock. The use of this understock produces healthy, fast growing trees with nice straight single trunks. A few of our offerings are grown on their own roots from cuttings, or from seed in the case of wild species. These are noted in the descriptions. Some of these varieties are extremely new and still quite rare, so we may only have a couple to offer, hence the higher prices.

MAGNOLIA sprengeri 'Diva'
(C) Large, fragrant, deep pink flowers in great profusion. Grows into a large, broad-spreading tree to 50 feet. Very cold-hardy. more info

MAGNOLIA sprengeri 'Eric Savill'
(C8) Fragrant, deep red-purple blossoms on a large statured plant. Originated at Savill Garden, England. more info

MAGNOLIA tripetala
(C8) Giant deciduous leaves to 2 feet long cluster at the ends of the branches. Flowers are white, about 8 inches across, and earlier than macrophylla, in early June. more info

MAGNOLIA virginiana Moonglow® 'Jim Wilson'
Magnolia Moonglow® aka 'Jim Wilson' is an exceptionally fast growing selection with fragrant creamy-white flowers in late May to June; an upright growth habit to 35 feet; and dark green semievergreen foliage. more info

MAGNOLIA virginiana 'Northern Belle'
(C8) The hardiest, most evergreen variety of sweetbay magnolia. It grows rapidly as a single stem tree form and it blooms for most of June and July in Ohio, with flowers somewhat larger than normal and very sweet-smelling. more info

MAGNOLIA virginiana 'Plena'
(C8) This is the rare double-flowered form of our native Sweetbay Magnolia, which is native to the Eastern U.S. Sweetly fragrant, small tree. more info

MAGNOLIA virginiana 'Santa Rosa'
(C) This native is an upright evergreen with more tree-like form and open growth habit than typical. Leaves of 'Santa Rosa' are also larger, as are the white lemon-scented flowers. more info

MAGNOLIA virginiana var australis Sweet Thing™ PP17,814 'Perry Paige'

MAGNOLIA virginiana var. australis 'Henry Hicks'
Remains evergreen down to about -17°F (Dirr) It grows more tree-like than other forms. more info

MAGNOLIA xwieseneri
(C8) A lovely small tree with creamy flowers. Initially upward-facing and cup-shaped, with an intoxicating pineapple fragrance! produced over several weeks in May and June. more info

MAGNOLIA zenii 'Pink Parchment'
Blooming in early February, it is likely the earliest blooming magnolia. Flowers are about 4 inches across, with purple-pink striping on the outside, white on the inside, and very fragrant. more info
